Newcastle United beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1 this evening in a top-of-the-table clash.

Alan Shearer and Joey Barton have taken to Twitter after Newcastle United came from behind to beat Brighton and Hove Albion 2-1.
The Magpies came from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 home draw with Bristol City on Saturday afternoon, and they had to bounce back from going behind again this evening.
With Brighton top of the Championship table and Newcastle second, this was a vital clash at the Amex Stadium, and Brighton drew first in this promotion battle.
Ciaran Clark was adjudged to have fouled Glenn Murray from a corner, and Murray stepped up to send Karl Darlow the wrong way and give the Seagulls the lead.
As the game entered the final ten minutes, Brighton looked to be heading towards a 1-0 win, but a bizarre goal saw Newcastle equalised, as Christian Atsu’s scuffed shot hit Daryl Murphy and then spun up off Mohamed Diame’s foot, looping over Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale and into the net.
A point each may have been a fair result, but Matt Ritchie’s raking pass found Atsu late on, and he pulled back for Ayoze Perez to finish calmly, giving Newcastle a 2-1 victory.

Rafael Benitez’s men now return to the top of the Championship table, two points clear of Brighton and eight points clear of this weekend’s opponents Huddersfield Town.
After the final whistle, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer took to Twitter to celebrate, noting that his beloved Magpies are now top of the league again, and praised the fans for their support.
Former Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton also offered his view, claiming that the Magpies were by far the better team, and whilst their equaliser was lucky, they ultimately deserved the win.
