Newcastle United fans have been rocked by the announcement today that Rafael Benitez is leaving the club.

The Premier League outfit have announced on their official website that Benitez will not be in charge of the first team next season.

The Spaniard’s current contract with Newcastle runs out at the end of the month, and it will not be renewed.

As expected, Newcastle fans have been left hugely disappointed at the imminent departure of Benitez.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has slammed the Magpies’ decision not to renew Benitez’s contract, and so have fans of the club, English TV presenting duo Ant & Dec – Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly.

Shearer wrote in The Sun: “Nothing surprises me at Newcastle any more. But for the club to let someone as talented and as special as Benitez leave for free, it really is a terrible situation.”

What now for Newcastle United?

Newcastle now have to start their search for a new manager, and it will be interesting to see who eventually replaces Benitez.

It is hard to envisage Newcastle attracting a better manager than Benitez this summer, and the team could struggle in the Premier League during the 2019-20 campaign.
