Newcastle United and Everton battled for a point at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
Even though Eddie Howe’s side have had so many injury issues, you still feel this was still points dropped for his team, especially after the madness of their 4-3 win over West Ham United over the weekend.
Everton are still hovering above the Premier League’s relegation zone and they are now 13 league games without a win.
But you just feel this was a point gained for Sean Dyche’s side, with Newcastle conceding a very late penalty, which was converted by Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Paul Dummett was the guilty party for his side because he brought down Ashley Young, with VAR checking the incident and then awarding the penalty.
Leon Osman made it clear that it was a definite penalty and it was ‘strange’ defending from the Newcastle defender.
But the ex-Everton midfielder shared that Alan Shearer was ‘adamant’ that it should never have been a spot-kick, as he told Premier League Productions (02/04/24 at 10:40 pm).
However, when the legendary striker took his Newcastle glasses off and saw a replay, he then changed his mind.

“We had a laugh about it, I am being generous there, Alan (Shearer) was adamant that it wasn’t a penalty, at first,” said Osman.
“I was adamant it had to be. It was strange defending from Dummett. First of all, he has let Ashley Young get into that goal-side position, from that he has panicked and grabbed him. He’s done what he shouldn’t have done and he has gifted Everton the opportunity to score a goal and get Dominic Calvert-Lewin on the scoresheet.”
Shearer added: “In my defence, once I seen the replay, then I said ‘yes, definite penalty’. I can’t complain about that.”
Problems for Newcastle and Everton
These two teams probably can’t wait for the season to be over because they have had many issues throughout the campaign.
On top of a points deduction, another could be looming for the Toffees, as well as the fact that they can’t even win a game.
They are on a club-record winless run and nothing suggests it will change anytime soon.
As for Newcastle, after the highs of a top-four finish last term, there is now every chance this injury-ravaged team doesn’t even secure Europe.
