Celtic have been linked with a move for the free agent midfielder.
Alan Rough has told PLZ Soccer that he reckons Celtic have a chance of luring veteran Yaya Toure to Parkhead this month after the midfielder became a free agent in December.
The 35-year-old left Manchester City in the summer after winning three Premier League titles at The Etihad, joining former club Olympiakos. However, he managed just five appearances and has since cancelled his contract.
Greek outlet Gazzetta.gr claimed that Celtic were planning a move to land the 97-time Ivory Coast international, and Toure himself told Sky Sports that perhaps his brother Kolo – who is a coach at Celtic – could help arrange a move.
“Celtic’s a great team. Let me speak with Brendan and we will see. Maybe Kolo is arranging something for me,” Toure said.
Now, former Celtic player Rough – who is now a director at Scottish Premiership side St. Mirren – is a co-host with PLZ Soccer and he claimed that Celtic have a chance of signing powerhouse midfielder Toure.
“I think it all depends on his relationship with the Toure that’s there,” Rough said. “I think he’ll obviously be on the phone chatting. He’ll be asking him about the place and club, he’ll be telling him about European football.
“Then he’ll have to assess where he wants to be. When I listened to him, I don’t think he was convinced about going back to England. I got the feeling, ‘I’ve done it, I want to move on and do something else’. I think they might have a chance.”
Celtic have already made three signings this month, bringing in attackers Timothy Weah on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, Oliver Burke on loan from West Bromwich Albion and Vakoun Issouf Bayo on a permanent basis.
However, the hype has surrounded Glasgow rivals Rangers after Steven Gerrard lured 57-time England internationa; Jermain Defoe to Ibrox on an 18-month deal while Steven Davis has returned to Ibrox on loan.
