Alan Rough has criticised Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers in The Glasgow Evening Times.

The former Celtic goalkeeper is not pleased with the way Rodgers is apparently treating Craig Gordon.

Gordon is the first-choice goalkeeper at Celtic at the moment, but the 33-year-old’s place in the team is under threat.

The Scottish Premiership giants signed Dorus de Vries from Nottingham Forest in the summer transfer window in order to provide the Scotland international with serious competition.

Rodgers worked with De Vries at Swansea City and knows the 35-year-old goalkeeper well.

Celtic's Craig Gordon

Rough believes that Gordon has been hung out to dry by the former Liverpool and Swansea manager for no fault of his own.

“I’ve got bit of sympathy for Craig Gordon,” Rough told The Glasgow Evening Times. “He’s been hung out to dry. It’s the modern day and things have moved on but I can’t get my head around this thing about goalkeepers having to be good with their feet.

“I watch goalkeepers warming up now and it’s all about touch. But it’s a sorry day if you’re telling me Craig Gordon can’t make a 10 or 15 yard pass to a full back.

“I don’t know what the manager is looking to get out of him. You’ve got to be comfortable with the ball at your feet, but he’s not uncomfortable. I just think it’s an excuse to get his own guy in.”

Gordon is a very good goalkeeper and is arguably the best in the Scottish Premiership at the moment. However, the Scotland international has made a few mistakes in recent months.

It made sense for Rodgers to bring in De Vries and make things tougher for Gordon, but the Celtic manager should have faith in the former Sunderland goalkeeper.

During the 2015-16 campaign, De Vries kept 11 clean sheets in 43 Championship matches for Forest.

Back in 2014-15, the goalkeeper made just four Championship appearances for the Reds.

During the 2013-14 campaign, the Dutchman kept one clean sheet in three league matches for Forest.
