Alan Pardew suggests he’s still figuring out West Brom starlet Sam Field’s best position; hails Gary Megson

Sam Field has been something of a revelation since returning to the West Bromwich Albion first-team.

Alan Pardew has suggested that he is still trying to work out what Sam Field’s best role in the West Brom side actually is, but insisted that the West Brom starlet is ticking boxes for him, while he also hailed Gary Megson for bringing him back into the fold, the Express and Star reports.

Field has come back into the first-team following Tony Pulis’ departure, making two appearances under former caretaker boss Megson, and has arguably been something of a revelation for the Baggies, scoring in the 2-2 draw with Newcastle in November – and enjoying an undefeated run this season, having made five appearances for the club in the Premier League this term and so far, winning two and drawing three.

The 19-year-old’s recent run of form has certainly been a positive, but Pardew has hinted that his performances may not always be so impressive in the near future as he admitted that they may be about to go through a period of trial and error trying to find his best position.

“It’s just what position is best suited to him. At times on Saturday he had his back to goal and it didn’t look comfortable for him,” he said, as reported by the Express and Star. “He looks like he needs to come from deep and that’s why we changed his position. All those things we need to find out.

“I spoke to Gary, who he played two games for and was terrific, fair play to Gary for picking him.

“Hopefully I will get the benefit of that. It’s three good performances.”

There is no question that Field’s form since returning to the side has injected some much needed positivity into the team after their disappointing run of form which has seen them go without a win since August.

And what should perhaps encourage West Brom fans even more is that Pardew appears to be suggesting that the best is yet to come from the teenager as he is already showing more than enough signs to suggest that he could soon become a key player for the side if he continues to progress at his current rate.
