This mooted defensive switch could change West Brom’s attacking philosophy under their new manager.
Alan Pardew has played down talk of a swap deal involving Jonny Evans heading to Arsenal for Mathieu Debuchy plus £10million, adding that such an offer would not interest him – per Sky Sports (14:11).
Evans has been heavily linked with a move away from West Bromwich Albion since the start of the season, but he remains at the Hawthorns with just days of the January transfer window remaining.
However, as rumours surrounding his future persist, West Brom may have to consider what sort of offer would see Evans leave the club.
And although Pardew may have no ambition to agree to the mooted switch with Debuchy, that is actually a transfer that could well suit the Baggies.
Debuchy has struggled at Arsenal, but he showed his best form in 18 months under Pardew at Newcastle United, earning the move to London with a string of fine performances.
Crucially, the France international is also a very forward-thinking full back, who looks to push on down the flank and join in with the attack.
Such a signing would represent a huge change from Tony Pulis’ unpopular defensive set-up and truly welcome in a new era under Pardew, who is expected to deliver more exciting football.
West Brom have the centre back options to cover Evans’ departure and Debuchy would offer something different. Pardew surely must be tempted.
