The West Bromwich Albion youngster has impressed this season.
West Brom boss Alan Pardew spoke exclusively to the Express & Star about what the future holds for Sam Field, suggesting that he envisages the youngster evolving into more of an attacking midfield player.
The 19-year-old has made 22 senior appearances for the Baggies, scoring one goal whilst operating mostly in an orthodox central midfield role, and has impressed during his fledgling career thus far.
This season has been a difficult one for the Black Country outfit, who are currently marooned at the bottom of the Premier League table, and it must be hard for Field to express himself in what is such a highly pressurised environment.
Pardew raved about the quality of the youngster, when speaking exclusively to the Express & Star, and predicted that he will become more of an attacking threat over the next few years:
“It’s definitely a central midfield role for him – it’s just a question of what he evolves into. It’s unusual for a young player to be a sitting midfielder at his age. To get forward and create opportunities and maybe run past the strikers and give us that kind of energy – I think that’s the kind of player he will be for the next three or four years, and a good player too.”
West Brom are currently 10 points adrift of safety, and will have to rack up at least five wins from their remaining eight games if they are to have any chance whatsoever of avoiding the drop down to the Championship.
Field will be hoping for the chance to make a real name for himself at the Hawthorns, but whether Pardew will be prepared to give him that opportunity remains to be seen.
