Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has said that the pressure he is currently feeling in the Selhurst Park hotseat does not compare with what he was faced with when in charge of Newcastle United, as reported by BBC Sport.
Palace had lost their last six Premier League games heading into Saturday’s clash with Pardew’s former club Southampton, and his job was though to be under serious threat after the disastrous 5-4 defeat to Swansea City last weekend.
However, everything seemed to go right for the Eagles on Saturday as Christian Bentekews brace and James Tomkins’ header secured a comfortable 3-0 win over a poor Saints side to lift them up to 13th in a tight bottom half of the table.
After the game, Pardew addressed the pressure of being a manager whose future is the subject of widespread negative speculation.
He admitted that though it makes his job difficult, the scrutiny is nowhere near as intense as it was when he was manager of Newcastle United.
Pardew said, via BBC Sport: “When the pressure racks up in the Premier League it’s hard but we got the balance right and we had some good attacking play.
“When you’ve been manager at Newcastle and the whole town lives and breathes football, you have to be able to cope with pressure. The pressure sometimes there was intense. It wasn’t as bad this week.”
Pardew certainly felt enough pressure for a lifetime during the latter stages of his time in charge at St. James’ Park from 2010 to 2014, as the club’s form nosedived in the second half of the 2013-14 campaign after he had initially led them to European qualification.
He began well at Palace too, leading them to highest ever Premier League finish of 10th in his first half-season, but he has since struggled, a 15th-placed finish last term being followed by a poor start to the current campaign.
