Alan Pardew told Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage of Newcastle’s clash with Southampton (broadcast on 15th October 2017 from 3:30 pm) that he thought that Jonjo Shelvey was terrific at St Mary’s.

The Magpies picked up where they left off before the international break, securing a 2-2 draw on the south coast to keep themselves ninth in the Premier League table, having suffered just one defeat in their previous six top flight games.

Though he did not get on the scoresheet in the draw – with Isaac Hayden and Ayoze Perez finding the back of the net while Manolo Gabbiadini bagging both equalisers – Shelvey put in another impressive display. And after the game, Pardew was full of praise for the Magpies talisman.

“We talked about Jonjo at the top of the game today, but I thought he was terrific today,” he told Sky Sports’ live post-match coverage of Newcastle’s clash with Southampton (broadcast on 15th October 2017 from 3:30 pm).

“Everything was clever and composed and they look they’ve got a few passes in, they’re growing in confidence.”

After these last two performances, Shelvey is undoubtedly putting himself well on his way to securing redemption following his stupid red card on the opening day of the season.

The midfielder has simply let his football do the talking, and his assist in the draw with Liverpool before the break highlighted just how devastating an impact he can make when he has the ball at his feet.

And Rafa Benitez will be hoping that the former Liverpool man continues to avoid creating the negative headlines as he is undoubtedly the player who has the quality to ensure that Newcastle build on their positive start to the season and perhaps keep themselves in the top-half of the table.
