Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has controversially suggested that the likes of Antonio Conte and Jurgen Klopp are given more leniency than other managers for their touchline behaviour, speaking to the London Evening Standard.

The issue of manager’s behaviour in their technical areas is a hot topic in the Premier League at the minute after Stoke City manager Mark Hughes was sent off last week.

The official judgement, according to the Welshman, has been that he is being fined because he stepped out of his assigned area.

That is a surprising ruling, though, given the likes of Conte and Klopp are renowned for often leaving their technical areas and Pardew believes they aren’t punished because they are given more leniencies by referees.

“The new managers – Conte, Klopp – are allowed to run around and some of us aren’t given quite as much licence,” he told the London Evening Standard.

“Mark Hughes was perhaps referencing that. One minute Sky are applauding a manager running up the pitch celebrating and then when the manager comes out of the box upset then that is treated in a whole different manner.”

The comments from Pardew certainly raise an interesting debate about how certain managers are treated by referees.

The likes of Conte and Klopp are well known to lively and passionate characters on the touchline and that is something that is often celebrated by fans and pundits alike.

So far they have not been in a situation where that has been negative and it will be interesting to see if they are punished as Hughes was in this incident.
