Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers were beaten 5-1 by Celtic in their latest fixture.
Alan McInally has told Sky Sports News, which was broadcast on 12th September, that Glasgow Rangers could take years to catch up with Celtic.
Rangers were beaten 5-1 in the Old Firm derby last weekend, and their performance was well short of the quality required to win at Parkhead.
Celtic looked thoroughly dominant, and McInally has suggested that Rangers have some way to go to catch up with their Glasgow rivals.
“The gulf is still big between Rangers and Celtic – and it’s probably going to be like that for the next couple of years. It was too much for Rangers to handle, it’s as simple as that,” he said.
“They were too good for them in so many areas. I think the buying power of Celtic, they’ll always be ahead of them for the next few years.”
Celtic raced into a 2-0 lead in the fixture when Moussa Dembele netted a first-half brace, before Joe Garner pulled one back for Rangers.
Mark Warburton’s side’s hope was short lived, though, with goals from Stuart Armstrong, Scott Sinclair and Dembele in the second period sealing a comprehensive victory for the Bhoys.
Rangers are now four points behind Celtic, and they are already playing catch up in the Scottish Premiership title race.
Rangers are next in action against Ross County, while Celtic face Barcelona later this evening.
