Aston Villa’s Alan Hutton was linked with moves away.
Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers and Aitor Karanka’s Nottingham Forest were reportedly interested in Alan Hutton, but the Aston Villa defender decided to commit his future to the Villans and ignore the Ibrox club and the Reds.
Earlier this month, The Birmingham Mail reported that returning to Rangers was an option for Hutton, as his (previous) contract with Villa was coming to an end this summer.
According to The Nottingham Post, Forest wanted to sign Hutton on a free transfer, with Karanka’s side having offered him a two-year deal.
However, the 33-year-old right-back decided to stay put, and has signed a new one-year deal at Villa.
It was quite a smart decision from Hutton, as he is settled at Villa and is an important player in Steve Bruce’s team.
The Sottish right-back has been at Villa since 2011 and is very popular among the club’s fans.
Moving to Forest would have been a risk, and there would also have been instant demands for success, with the Reds aiming to finish in the Championship playoffs next season.
Hutton was a success during his first spell at Rangers, and moving back to Ibrox could have had a negative impact and could have backfired – just ask Danny Wilson, who left the Gers in January 2018 after a second spell at the Gers.
