Alan Hutton expressed his delight on Instagram after he made a return to the Aston Villa starting XI during their 2-1 defeat to champions Norwich City on Sunday.

The 34-year-old has not played for Villa since their 1-1 draw at Stoke in February because of injury, but he played the full 90 minutes in what was the final match of the regular season.

From a defensive standpoint, Hutton struggled against Onel Hernandez, particularly in the first 20 minutes, but he grew into the game and did win a number of fouls in the attacking third.

With Dean Smith resting a number of his key players heading into the playoffs, Hutton was given the captain’s armband for the day in what could be his final match for the club.

Here is Hutton sending a message to the Villa Park faithful, as posted on his personal Instagram account:

Hutton has been a great servant to Villa over the years and he has become a firm fan favourite. But many would agree that his time at the club could be coming to an end.

Whether Villa are promoted or they remain in the second tier for another season, Smith will more than likely be looking to build a team for the future.

Nonetheless, this Saturday, Villa will host Midland rivals West Brom in the first leg of their playoff semi-final in what is expected to be a mouthwatering encounter.
