Alan Curbishley has told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT today, December 12, that West Ham United boss David Moyes has improved fitness levels since taking the job.

The Scottish manager replaced Slaven Bilic in East London last month and there have been some very promising signs of improvement.

The Irons lost their first game under Moyes – a 2-0 defeat at Watford – and then drew 1-1 with Leicester City at the London Stadium, but their 2-1 defeat at the all-conquering Manchester City, courtesy of a late David Silva winner, was a hugely promising sign and one that they built on at the weekend.

Moyes’s side beat Chelsea 1-0 at home on Saturday as Marko Arnautovic’s sixth-minute winner proved enough to down the Premier League champions and give the former Everton boss his first win.

And Curbishley believes that the acquisition of his old fitness coach Nick Davies is a reason behind their upturn in fortunes as of late.

“David took my old fitness coach, Nick Davies, in there and I understand the fitness levels, the stats, were pretty poor,” he told Alan Brazil’s Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT, broadcast December 12.

“I know lots of managers talk about that when they go into a club and say let’s improve the fitness levels, but I think it was something West Ham needed to do. The proof is on the pitch.”

West Ham, still in the relegation zone but only on goal difference, host Arsenal on Wednesday and another win would go a long way to convincing the fans – and the more importantly the players – that they can win their relegation scrap.
