Watford fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Chelsea in a fiery London derby at Vicarage Road.
Watford’s Miguel Britos looks dejected after the match
Watford lead Chelsea by a goal with ten minutes to spare at Vicarage Road, but goals from Michy Batshuayi and Diego Costa denied the Hornets of any points in a game not without incident.
The two bosses, Walter Mazarri of Watford and Antonio Conte of Chelsea were great rivals back in Italy, and it was clear that they brought that competitiveness with them to their respective London sides.
The match started well for Watford with Etienne Capoue volleying home for his second goal in as many weeks, to put his team 1-0 up at a time when Watford were really in control of proceedings.
However, late substitutions from Conte changed the dimension of the match and one of those substitutes, new signing Michy Batshuayi, equalised for Chelsea with ten minutes to spare. As Watford searched for a winner, Diego Costa broke away and placed it under keeper Heurelho Gomes to take all 3 points back to Stamford Bridge.
There’s an argument as to whether the Spanish forward should have still been on the pitch, after dissent earn him a yellow card and then a blatant dive towards the end of the match could have ended up with Costa receiving his marching orders.
Hornets fans were in circumspect mood after the game on Twitter, here are some of your reactions.
