Rovers’ Shane Duffy heads in to score the winner
Last night in an EFL Cup tie between Blackburn Rovers and Crewe Alexandra, redemption was spelt D-U-F-F-Y.
The Irish centre-back, who’s future at the club remains uncertain amidst interest from Brighton, was villainised by fans at Ewood Park last week for infamously scoring two own-goals before being sent off in their league defeat to Cardiff – and understandably so.
Blackburn’s Shane Duffy
However, Duffy turned his fortune on its head by this time scoring Blackburn’s winning goal in extra time to secure a 4-3 victory.
A sparse crowd of just 3,448 spectators were treated to a thrilling game; a match full of late drama that required extra time to be settled.

The visitors actually went two goals ahead on the scoreline, before Blackburn fought back. Rovers must have thought they had won the game when Craig Conway put them in front on 88 minutes, only for Crewe striker Chris Dagnall to equalise in the dying seconds to take the game to additional time.
The match was to save the most dramatic moment until last however, as Duffy rose above his marker to head Blackburn into the next round, prompting more upheaval from the clubs’ supporters on Twitter – upheaval of a far more positive tone, it must be said.
Here are some examples of what Rovers fans have had to say about Shane Duffy’s zero-to-hero attempt last night.
