Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko has joined FC Midtjylland on loan until the end of the season.
Erik Sviatchenko has put his nightmare Celtic season behind him by rejoining former club FC Midtjylland on loan until the end of the season – and teammates Cristian Gamboa and Kristoffer Ajer have wished him the best of luck on Instagram.
The 26-year-old has managed just two appearances all season for Brendan Rodgers’ side, as he suffered a number of niggling injuries that prevented him from featuring for the first-team on a regular basis.
Following the signing of Marvin Compper, Sviatchenko has decided to leave after falling behind the German as well as Ajer, Dedryck Boyata and Jozo Simunovic. Ajer posed “all the best at FC Midtjylland my good friend” in a separate post.
His absence has seen the rise of Norwegian Ajer at centre-back as well as the versatility of Kieran Tierney and Nir Bitton, who have both been drawn away from their natural positions at times to cover the five-time Denmark international.
Costa Rica international Gamboa also sent a message to Sviatchenko, replying with “good luck amigo” to the commanding defender’s own upload on Instagram.
Sviatchenko will now be hoping he can regain his form and put his injury demons behind him in order to impress in his home country and earn a place in Denmark’s World Cup squad, ahead of this summer’s finals in Russia.
With more than two years remaining on his current Celtic deal, it remains to be seen where the defender’s long-term future lies.
