Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka has explained the decision to allow Albert Adomah to join Aston Villa, speaking to the Gazette.
The winger departed the Riverside on deadline day of the summer transfer window in a deal thought to have cost Roberto di Matteo’s side around £5 million.
The move was something of a surprising one given he was a regular in the Championship for Boro last season, featuring 43 times and playing a key role in helping them back into the Premier League.

More surprising was the fact that the player was willing to give up top-flight football to drop back down into the second tier.
However, Karanka has insisted that the size of Villa means they are not really a Championship team.
“Everyone understood for Albert that it was a good move,” he told the Gazette.
“Villa are in the Championship but if you look at their trophy cabinet, there is a European Cup there. So they’re not really a Championship team. It is a big step for him – to a really good, historic team in the world.”

Adomah will now be keen to prove the move was a wise one and help Villa back into the Premier League this season.
There is a lot of pressure on Roberto Di Matteo’s team, who have spent big money to build a squad they feel can ensure promotion this season.
Those signings must now prove their worth and Adomah will be hoping to enjoy as successful a campaign as he had last season with Boro.
