Middlesbrough manager Aitor Karanka was stunned that his side lost to Leeds United.
Earlier today, title chasing Middlesbrough faced off against in-form Leeds United in the Championship – with a surprise outcome.
Inside the first minute of the game, Leeds scored the only goal of the game, with Alex Mowatt handing Neil Redfearn’s men all three points.
The victory took Leeds up into 11th place, giving them a fifth win in the last six games as Redfearn enjoys his finest spell as Leeds manager.
Yet for Middlesbrough, it was a frustrating afternoon. Aitor Karanka’s men had 27 shots on goal compared to Leeds’ eight, finding goalkeeper Marco Silvestri in unbeatable form between the sticks.
Karanka spoke to the Middlesbrough official website after the game, and was staggered that his side couldn’t find the winner.
“It was amazing, I can’t believe we didn’t win the game,” said Karanka. “We did everything to win and we have lost but now we have to think about the future we have another game on Tuesday.”
“I thought our performance was good and we had many chances but we can’t forget our efforts and we have another important game on Tuesday,” he added.
Middlesbrough now face Bolton in midweek, and will be hoping to get their promotion push back on track after today’s blip at the Riverside Stadium.
They were aided by surprise defeats for Bournemouth and Ipswich in the race for the automatic promotion spots, but will need to break teams down if they hope to return to the Premier League.
