Paul Merson is seemingly changing his mind about Tottenham’s style of play after praising them on Soccer Saturday (17/10/20 at 1:55 pm) for scoring a ‘proper footballing goal’ at Old Trafford before the international break.
The outspoken TV pundit thinks it all stems from their clash against Southampton last month, where he questioned whether ‘words were said’ between the players at half-time and they decided upon themselves to play in a more free-flowing manner because of the ‘talent’ they have in the squad.
It wasn’t long ago that Merson annoyed those at Tottenham by suggesting that Harry Kane would now struggle to score goals because of Jose Mourinho’s style of play [Sky Sports].
And ahead of their clash against West Ham today, Merson praised the manner in which they played during that thumping win at Manchester United despite his previous comments.
“You have got to think, it wasn’t even two weeks before that [Man United game], they were getting ripped to shreds by Southampton,” Merson told Sky Sports. “They were getting ripped to shreds. Everton had ripped them apart [on the opening day].
“I think they came in at half-time [against Southampton] for that game and I ain’t sure if words were said. I think players have gone ‘we have to go out and play because we have talent in the team’.

“They are passing and moving. It’s all one-touch football. People running off the ball, which is the name of the game.
“That’s a proper footballing goal [Aurier’s against Man United], which you probably work on in training. You probably work on that in training. You do them kind of stuff and you think ‘why are we doing this for this ain’t working, is it?’ But it does because Pogba falls asleep.”

Well, there’s no doubt that Merson is being proven wrong by those in North London, at this moment in time.
After four matches, Mourinho’s men have found the back of the net on 12 occasions – only Chelsea, Liverpool and Everton have scored more, but they have played a game extra.
Not only that, the manner in which Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son are combining is truly remarkable, and that’s without Gareth Bale.
