Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers travel to Motherwell this weekend – this time under Mark Warburton.
Lionel Ainsworth has claimed to The Scottish Sun that Saturday’s opponents Rangers will know that he and his Motherwell team-mates will give them a tricky game at Fir Park.
The Gers face Motherwell in their first competitive game of the season this weekend as Mark Warburton’s side gear up for a hectic period.
The trip to Fir Park is Rangers’ first League Cup outing of four in a nine-day period, and the Glasgow giants will be returning to the scene of their 3-0 demolition in the Scottish Premiership playoffs 14 months ago in a result which sealed a 6-1 aggregate defeat.
Ainsworth scored in both of those ties, but although Rangers are a much different animal under Warburton, the 28-year-old midfielders says the blues will still know victory against Mark McGhee’s side is anything but a foregone conclusion.
He told The Scottish Sun: “There are many people who think Rangers can win it,” Ainsworth said about their Premiership title hopes.
“That’s what goes with the territory of being a massive club. But we want to win on Saturday and they will know that they are in a game when they come to our place.”
One of Rangers’ biggest signings this summer has been midfielder Joey Barton, but the 33-year-old is unlikely to feature against Motherwell.
Barton, who joined on a Bosman after helping Burnley win promotion to the Premier League last term, only began pre-season training this week.
