Everton’s Tom Davies starred for the England Under-21’s last night.
England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd has told the Daily Mail that he felt Everton’s Tom Davies was ‘outstanding’ against Kosovo last night.
Whilst England’s senior side take on Kosovo tonight in a EURO 2020 qualifier, the two Under-21 sides met last night at Hull City’s KCOM Stadium.
Manchester City’s Phil Foden stole the headlines with both goals in a 2-0 victory for England, scoring after 25 minutes and then adding the second in added time.
Foden may have stolen the show in front of goal, but the performance of fellow midfielder Davies has been praised too.
Fans took to Twitter to hail Davies for a ‘class’ performance, and his manager has now joined in with the praise of the Everton talent.
Boothroyd praised Davies for an ‘outstanding’ display in which he played a new role as a holding midfielder, and was blown away by his two performances over the international break given that he’s not even playing for Everton right now.
“Tom was outstanding,” said Boothroyd. “He’s not playing for his club side, to put those two performances in. We’ll see how that holding role develops,” he added.
This will hopefully be a massive confidence boost to the 21-year-old, who has bizarrely played just 11 minutes of first-team action for Everton this season.
Marco Silva has seemed reluctant to put Davies into the side, failing to even play him in the Carabao Cup tie with Lincoln City.
Fabian Delph started the season injured, Jean-Philippe Gbamin is now injured and Morgan Schneiderlin has been suspended already this season, but Davies still hasn’t featured beyond that brief substitute appearance.
Everton fans may now hope to see more of Davies, and his progress as a holding midfielder may just give Silva the encouragement to throw him into first-team action again soon.
