Tottenham new boy is in the England under-21 squad.
It is hard to blame Tottenham Hotspur for feeling nervous about Ryan Sessegnon being called up to England’s under-21 squad.
Sessegnon suffered an injury for England’s under-21 side in the summer which he has only just recovered from.
Even so, the youngster is yet to make his first start for Tottenham, with just two substitute appearances to his name this season for a combined 17 minutes of action.
England under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd says that discussions will take place with Tottenham about Sessegnon and managing him smartly, although said that manager Mauricio Pochettino has not personally been in touch.
He even promised to send Sessegnon back in even better shape.
Boothroyd is quoted by The Times: “We make sure we get him fit, keep him fit, and goes back to him better than when he arrives. We’ll make sure we look after him.”
“We’ve been keeping an eye on him. He comes in with us and we get in contact with the medical team at Spurs. There’s conversations had and we take it from there.”
Sessegnon needs game time and this could be a good opportunity for him.
If he can get a 90 minute game under his belt and come through it unscathed then Sessegnon and Tottenham will be better off for it, especially if he can get a goal and lift his confidence.
The problem is there is an element of risk, and if it backfires and Sessegnon picks up another injury, it will be Spurs left counting the cost.
