Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady raved about reported Celtic target Alfie Doughty on The Go Radio Football Show on Go Radio (5pm, September 7, 2020), as transcribed by The Scottish Sun.
McGeady, who started his professional club football career at Celtic, played with Doughty at Charlton Athletic last season.
The 34-year-old Republic of Ireland international winger spent the second half of last season on loan at the Addicks from Sunderland.
The former Everton man has raved about the 20-year-old English midfielder and has outlined his attributes.
According to The Daily Record, Celtic have had an initial offer for Doughty rejected by Charlton, who will play in League One in England this season after getting relegated from the Championship.
The report has added that the Glasgow giants will make an improved bid of £400,000 plus add-ons, but the Hoops do not want to pay over the odds and are ready to wait until January and sign him on a pre-contract or on a cut-price deal.
McGeady said about Doughty on The Go Radio Football Show on Go Radio (5pm, September 7, 2020), as transcribed by The Scottish Sun: “He’s young and has pace to burn. Open the gates a little bit at times.
“He’s got something. He’s probably the modern day footballer. You’d go, he is athletic and catches the eye. He definitely did for us last season.
“Sometimes when he gets to the by-line he can be a little bit hit and miss or a little bit head down. But he is very, very quick and can get the team up the park. He did that for us last season.
“I am actually surprised at that to be honest with you, although saying that there was talk of Fulham coming in for him in January.”
One for the future
Doughty is a very good and talented young midfielder who will be a smart investment for Celtic.
While the midfielder has experience of first-team football, he is unlikely to go straight into the Hoops’ starting lineup if he is to join the Scottish Premiership giants this summer, and is one for the future.
