Glasgow Rangers defender Aidan Wilson is hoping that he can become a success at Ibrox in the future.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Aidan Wilson has suggested that he hopes to become a first-team regular at Rangers – just like David Bates has done over the last few months.

Bates had to bide his time at Ibrox after his loan move was turned into a permanent deal, but has since established himself as a key member of the first-team in recent months. Before sustaining a nasty-looking injury in the Old Firm game, the 21-year-old was playing regularly for Graeme Murty’s side and had arguably been the Gers’ best centre-back.

And that has led Wilson – who is currently on loan with Scottish Championship side Dumbarton, along with fellow Ibrox youngster Liam Burt – to suggest that he hopes to follow Bates’ lead and progress into the Rangers first-team in the future.

“Hopefully this experience will help me get into the Rangers first team. Graeme has done a great deal of work with me over the past two years. He has improved me a lot and hopefully has faith in me,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty looks on during the Rangers v Celtic Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“When you look at someone like David, who has done really well and is a first-team regular, hopefully I can follow his pathway.”

Murty’s stock may have fallen following the last two results, but there can be no doubt that he deserves a lot of credit for putting some foundations in place, with some of the players coming through at under-20 level and some of those youngsters now making an impact in the first-team.

Showing to the academy starlets with players such as Bates and Ross McCrorie that the path to the first-team is definitely there ensures that they have all the motivation that they could need to push while they are developing as they know that a chance in the senior side could be on the cards.

And with Wilson coming through at centre-back, it appears that he has as good a chance as any of the club’s youngsters to earn that prolonged opportunity as it appears to be an area of the pitch where Rangers need to improve, despite Bates’ emergence.
