Yesterday’s news that Romelu Lukaku won’t be signing a new contract, as reported by Sky Sports, at Everton went down well with fans of a few rival clubs, but perhaps none more so than Southampton.
Many Saints supporters were unhappy with Ronald Koeman’s decision to swap the club for Everton in the summer, feeling it was a sideways move at best given they had finished above the Toffees two years in a row.
The Dutchman has always been coy about his reasons for leaving the South Coast, with a comment that he was “really disappointed” in Southampton’s new contract offer the most revealing he’s made.
However Southampton’s inability – or perhaps more importantly lack of desire – to hold onto their best players has often been put forward the real reason for Koeman deciding the grass was greener on Merseyside.

So the news that Lukaku will not be signing a new deal with Everton, just as the likes of Nathaniel Clyne and Victor Wanyama couldn’t be convinced to extend their contracts at Southampton, was music to the ears of a lot of Southampton fans.
