Gaston Ramirez may have left Southampton in the summer, but he still played a role in convincing a new signing to join the club this week.

Speaking to the Southampton’s website after signing a contract until the end of the season, Martin Caceres said he was convinced to come to the South Coast after speaking with Ramirez. The pair know each other well from their time spent together representing Uruguay.

“When the option came up for me to join Southampton, I spoke with him (Ramirez), and he spoke very highly of it,” revealed Caceres.

“He told me that the club operates very well and has fantastic fans.

“That was, without doubt, one of the main reasons that drew me to a move here.”

The defender’s first game for Southampton will probably be the final of the EFL Cup, but it seems unlikely he will start as he hasn’t played for more than a year, having suffered a serious knee injury.

He was released by Juventus in the summer, making him a free agent and therefore able to sign outside of the transfer window.

Caceres will be hoping his Southampton career is more successful than Ramirez’s stint at the club. Ramirez was hampered by injuries and struggled to get a game after scoring five goals in a decent first campaign.

Once Southampton’s record signing, Ramirez was loaned to Middlesbrough last season and released in the summer, allowing him to join Boro on a permanent basis.
