Everton boss Ronald Koeman could be tempted to work with Jordy Clasie again.
Jordy Clasie celebrates scoring Southampton’s first goal in a 2-0 EFL Cup win at Arsenal
With questions marks over the futures of some Everton central midfielders and others hampered by injuries, could they find themselves making a move for Jordy Clasie this summer?
While the Dutchman has struggled to establish himself as a regular since arriving at Southampton – making just 10 Premier League starts this season, the last of which came in January – he’s a player Ronald Koeman knows well and appreciates.
It was Koeman, of course, who brought him to Southampton, having previous managed him at Feyenoord, and Koeman has further shown a fondness for signing former players in recruiting Morgan Schneiderlin and Marten Stekelenburg, a pair he also worked with at Southampton.
As question marks hover over many of his central midfielders it’s not unlikely that Koeman will want to bring another to Goodison Park in the summer.
Idrissa Gueye is being linked with a move away, as Mancherster United and Arsenal are both keen according to the Mirror, and at 35 Gareth Barry is now on the wane.
Ronald Koeman’s transfer dealings have shown he likes to know what he’s buying
Meanwhile James McCarthy’s fitness has to be a cause for concern and Muhamed Besic, who is recovering from tearing one of his anterior cruciate ligaments, has not played at all this season and how he’ll fare remains to be seen.
As Koeman likes to use a lot of central midfielders – he recently fielded four plus Ross Barkley at Tottenham – Clasie could well be a target this summer.
His struggles in the English game must be of concern but he’s 25, is out of favour with his current club so wouldn’t be too costly and is familiar with Koeman’s methods, so would make sense on many levels.
Could Goodison Park be Clasie’s home next season?
