Speaking on the Match of the Day top 10 Podcast, Gary Lineker has been serenading Trent Alexander-Arnold while reminiscing over his incredible corner against Barcelona in 2019.
The pundit was tasked with mediating as Alan Shearer and Micah Richards were picking their top 10 Premier League set-piece takers of all-time, and as you can imagine, Alexander-Arnold made the cut.
Shearer had the right-back in his bottom five, but Lineker believes that he should have a higher spot just because of that corner against Barca.
Lineker lauded the full-backs intuition and creativity, labelling him ahead of his time and so smart.
What’s been said?
Lineker had good things to say about the Liverpool star.
“It’s worth putting him higher just because of the corner he took against Barcelona, that was unbelievable wasn’t it? Talk about being ahead of his time, what was he? 21 at the time?” Lineker said.
“It was so clever wasn’t it? You could just see him see it in the corner of his eye. He was just so smart,” Lineker added.

Genius
When you look back at some of the smartest moves in footballing history Alexander-Arnold’s corner is right up there.
In terms of sheer in the moment brilliance, not much compares to Alexander-Arnold catching the Barcelona defence napping and Divock Origi converting to put Liverpool into the Champions League final.
To try something so audacious against such opposition on such an occasion at such a young age is simply incredible.
Lineker is right, Alexander-Arnold is one of the smartest footballers around.
