Agents working on behalf of Liverpool have now contacted Inter Milan to discuss a January transfer for Milan Skriniar. Jurgen Klopp wants the centre-back after Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

That is according to 90min, which reports the Reds are stepping up their interest in Skriniar as Van Dijk has a hamstring problem. Klopp has also admitted the Dutchman will now miss more than a month. He suffered the blow during the Anfield side’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford.

Inter Milan are loath to let Skriniar leave San Siro in January but are aware they face a fight to keep him. As the 27-year-old is out of contract in June, they will also reluctantly listen to offers this month. But the Nerazzurri will only grant a deal if Skriniar snubs a new contract.

San Siro chiefs are still pushing Skriniar to accept fresh terms and stay at the Serie A side. It is a difficult dream to retain the 54-cap Slovakia captain, though. So, Inter Milan are braced to receive offers. The defender is highly sought-after among a host of Europe’s elite teams.

Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle United are all ready to make Skriniar offers to join for free. Paris Saint-Germain are also long-term admirers and see him as the ideal replacement for Sergio Ramos. PSG may also move in January if Ramos leaves.

Tottenham may be Liverpool’s biggest threat to Skriniar’s transfer from Inter Milan

Skriniar is yet to decide his future and could wait until the summer to get a more lucrative contract. But agents working on behalf of Liverpool are now in active talks with Inter Milan over a January transfer. Van Dijk’s injury has left Klopp seeking defensive reinforcements.

Tottenham Hotspur may prove to be a thorn in the Anfield natives’ side, however. Antonio Conte wants to reunite with his former Inter Milan star in January, per CalcioMercatoWeb. Spurs are also prepared to pay €30m (£26.5m) to avoid a fight over a Bosman deal in June.

Conte won Serie A with Inter Milan and with Skriniar playing a vital role in his team back in 2020/21. The centre-back – who joined the Nerazzurri from Sampdoria for €18m (£16m) in 2017 – also remains vital at San Siro today. He has started 15 of their 16 fixtures this term.
