Bjarnason scored in Aston Villa’s most recent Championship fixture.

Birkir Bjarnason’s agent has told Tuttomercatoweb that the Aston Villa midfielder is open to a return to Italy, amid interest from Serie A strugglers SPAL.
Bjarnason has made just seven starts since his January 2017 move from FC Basel, although he was on target in Villa’s 5-0 win against Bristol City on New Year’s Day.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, an approach for the 29-year-old arrived from SPAL this week, at the insistence of manager Leonardo Semplici.

And Bjarnason’s representative Jim Solbakken told the Italian website: “Birkir would like to return to Serie A. He was very good in Italy and would like to play again in the Italian league, but he is totally focused on Aston Villa.
“The club is fighting to get back in the Premier League and his only thought is to do well with his club’s shirt.
“We’ll see what happens.”
Aston Villa, who are fifth in the Championship and only five points off the automatic positions, are not short in Bjarnason’s position, with Conor Hourihane, Jack Grealish and Henri Lansbury among those with whom he is competing for minutes.

And things could get worse for the Iceland international, who previously played for Sampdoria and Pescara in Italy, with the Villans being linked with a move for Nick Powell of Wigan Athletic.
Powell played under Villa boss Steve Bruce at Hull City two seasons ago.
