Agent says big offer was made for his client, would’ve made sense if it was Newcastle – Our View

Speaking to talkSPORT, Saif Rubie – Antonio Rudiger’s agent, has made a claim about the interest shown in his client this summer.

Rudiger, of course, left Chelsea on a free at the end of his contract this summer, and there were so many clubs on his tail.

The German ultimately ended up at Real Madrid, but the likes of PSG and Tottenham were also credited with an interest, while Newcastle were also strong contenders for his signature.

According to Rubie, there was an offer on the table from an English club that would’ve almost doubled the wages he’s currently on at Madrid, and, in our view, that offer may well have been from Newcastle.

The agent spoke about his client’s options on talkSPORT.

“Let me confirm this, live on air, the Real Madrid deal was the smallest deal on offer,” Rubie said.

“There was a club in England offering almost double the amount and a club in Europe doubling the amount.

“I’m not going to discuss the specifics. Everyone knows there was teams interested in this player. He was one of the best in the world.”

Newcastle makes sense

Rubie was very careful not to name which club made this offer to Rudiger, but it’s easy to make the argument that it could’ve been Newcastle.

The Magpies were, of course, in the market for a new centre-back this summer, eventually landing Sven Botman, but let’s not forget, around the time of Rudiger’s contract expiry, Botman looked as though he’d be headed to AC Milan.

Newcastle certainly have the money to make Rudiger such an offer, while this sort of offer wouldn’t have made sense for other interested parties.

Antonio Conte knows Rudiger from his time at Chelsea, but Spurs have a very strict wage structure, so that rules them out of this equation, Liverpool were tenuously linked, but they didn’t move for a centre-back in the end, so offering massive money for Rudiger wouldn’t have made sense there either.

Manchester United were mentioned rather strongly, but Erik ten Hag was seemingly set on getting a left-footer and he got that in the shape of Lisandro Martinez in the end.

We may never know which club made this offer, but it’s not ridiculous to suggest that it could’ve been Newcastle who asked the question to Rudiger.
