Everton had an incredible transfer window. The Toffees brought in Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez in a week, before finishing the transfer window with the signings of Ben Godfrey and Robin Olsen.

The arrivals have made Everton a real force in the Premier League. The Toffees have won each of the seven games they have played in all competitions so far this season, and are currently top of the league.

Everton fans are thrilled about their new boys, but those arrivals have cost some Toffees’ stars a place in the starting line-up. One such player is Bernard. The Brazilian joined the club for free in 2018, but he was very close to leaving on deadline day.

Liverpool Echo claimed that Italian side AS Roma, now managed by Bernard’s former boss Paulo Fonseca, came in with a £7 million bid to sign the Brazilian on transfer deadline day.

Ancelotti, however, reportedly made it clear that he wanted the former Shakhtar star in his squad, and that a move is not an option. Bernard’s agent has revealed now that the Everton boss did block the move, but he has hinted that a switch in January is possible.

Adriano Spadoto told Italian outlet LaRoma24: “We tried to convince Everton to let him go, but the English club did not agree. Not even on loan. (Is a January move to Rome possible?) I think so, the player could be sold outright for around €7million [£6.5million].”

A January move is on the cards

Bernard is yet to feature for the Toffees in the Premier League this season. However, he has played the full 90 minutes in two of their league cup games, and he has been directly involved in two goals.

Ancelotti is happy with Richarlison on one wing and James Rodriguez on the other. Both are clearly undroppable at the moment, which makes it extremely difficult for Bernard to get considerable game time in the Premier League.

A move away in January is a serious possibility. Roma boss Fonseca clearly is a fan of Bernard, and a move to the Italian capital could well materialise in the winter transfer window in three months.
