Mateo Cassierra’s agent is refusing to rule out a move to Europa League finalists Rangers for FC Sochi’s former Ajax striker, speaking to Championat.
This was supposed to be a story with a fairytale ending. Instead, Cinderella’s whirlwind romance ended in the divorce courts, Aaron Ramsey’s missed penalty condemning Rangers to the most valiant and heartbreaking of defeats in Seville.
But this is no time to wallow in self pity.
Keep a talented squad together – though that is no easy task with Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Steven Davis, Joe Aribo, Allan McGregor and Connor Goldson all set to become free-agents between now and July 2023 – plus a couple of intelligent additions, and maybe this this does not need to be, as many have dubbed, a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity.
Mateo Cassierra to Rangers?
Cassierra has scored 11 times since joining Russian outfit FC Sochi from Belenenenses last summer.
And reporter Roman Naguchev claimed, in the build-up to Rangers’ Europa League final clash with Eintracht Frankfurt at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, that the Glasgow giants had held initial talks with the Colombian’s representatives.
“The Rangers are definitely in need of a striker,” Naguchev tells Sport24 of Morelos’ 25-year-old compatriot. “Mateo Cassierra is very interesting for the club.
“The Rangers management has already contacted Sochi. (Giovanni) Van Bronkhorst knows this player well.”

Van Bronckhorst will know Cassierra from his time in the Feyenoord dugout. The striker represented Eredivisie duo Ajax and Groningen between 2016 and 2019 after all, having moved to Holland for a cool £5 million six years ago.

Cassierra’s agent, Martin Araoz, is reluctant to give much away when discussing his clients’ future. But, tellingly, he did not rule out a summer move to Ibrox.
“Let’s see if Mateo leaves Russia in the summer or not,” says Araoz. “It all depends on how events develop. Rangers? We are considering various options.”
