Has there ever been a transfer window when Arsenal weren’t looking to sign a central defender? The Gunners are back at it yet again and many feel that they will not succeed without a new centre-half.

Arsenal conceded 48 goals in 38 Premier League games last season; only Chelsea and Burnley had a worse record in the top half of the table.

Mikel Arteta’s arrival increased the optimism around the Emirates and the FA Cup win last weekend has raised expectations ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Spaniard needs to fix Arsenal’s leaky defence to have any chance of taking the club back into the top four. The Gunners have been linked with a number of defenders and Lille’s Gabriel Magalhaes is said to be high on their list.

The Gunners have been linked with the Brazilian for quite some time now. However, interest from Everton and Napoli cooled the rumours over a potential move to North London.

This isn’t the first time Arsenal are battling Napoli for a Lille player. Nicolas Pepe was said to be very close to a move to Naples last term but the Gunners swooped in at the last second to sign the Ivorian.

History could well repeat itself this summer. France Bleu Nord claim today that the Gunners are the favourites to land Gabriel as Lille’s situation with Napoli has changed.

Arsenal fans would certainly love the Brazilian at the Emirates next term, and some supporters find it funny that Edu and Raul Sanllehi could steal a Lille player away from Napoli for the second season in a row.

Here is how a few of them reacted on Twitter
