Newcastle fans love Aleksandar Mitrovic. Fortunately, the feeling is entirely mutual.
The agent of Newcastle United striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has played down a potential move to Napoli, saying his client will remain at St James’ Park for the remainder of the campaign, according to Football Italia.
The Serbian started the season slowly after missing the opening few fixtures following a red card in the final Premier League game of 2015/16, with Dwight Gayle and Ayoze Perez cementing their roles as Rafael Benitez’s first choice strike partnership in his absence.
However, Mitrovic has come to life in recent weeks, scoring four and assisting one in his last three games in league and cup, with Newcastle’s vociferous fan base demanding that their hot-heated number 45 be rewarded with further game time.
To date, the 22-year-old has started just three Championship games this season, prompting speculation that Napoli could swoop in as they look to fill a gaping hole at the tip of their attack created by the departure of Gonzalo Higuain (below) and a serious injury to Arkadiusz Milik.
Consequently, Mitrovic’s agent has now moved to play down the speculation, insisting that the powerful frontman will be at Newcastle until next summer at least.
“It is very unlikely at the moment [that Mitrovic will leave]. The only certainty right now is that he will end the season at Newcastle United,” Nenad Jestrovic told CalcioNapoli24, as reported by Football Italia.
“In the past there was some contact, but for now it’s out of the question. He will spend another six months in England, then decide what to do with his future.”
If the man himself is to be believed, Newcastle fans have no reason to worry.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Mitrovic claimed that he wanted to spend the rest of his career on Tyneside after falling in love with the famously passionate footballing city.
