Mateo Cassierra’s agent has omitted Scottish Premiership giants Rangers when discussing the potential destinations for FC Sochi’s much-coveted centre-forward, speaking to Championat.
How much you can read into Nikos Petropoulos’ claims, at this stage, is anyone’s guess.
But with Cassierra’s representative opting to go public with interest in one of the Russian Premier League’s most in-demand players, you would assume that – if Ibrox really was a likely destination – then Rangers would at least have been mentioned in passing.
“I am ready to name the clubs that are interested in Cassierra,” Petropoulos says. “In Russia, there is Zenit. Mateo really likes this option.
“In addition to St. Petersburg, good contracts are (being) offered by River Plate and Red Star (Belgrade). And there is also interest from Olympiacos and Fenerbahce.”
Could Mateo Cassierra still end up at Rangers?
Rangers reportedly entered talks to sign Alfredo Morelos’ fellow Colombian in the aftermath of May’s Europa League final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville. Cassierra, meanwhile, pointed out that Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst knows him well when quizzed about a potential move to Scotland (Daily Record).

Van Bronckhorst, after all, was still in charge of Feyenoord when Eredivisie rivals Ajax paid £5 million for a teenage Cassierra back in 2016.
A new centre-forward appears to be one of Rangers’ top targets this summer. And, with 14 goals, Cassierra finished joint-second in the RPL’s Golden Boot race. According to the Northern Echo, however, the Glasgow giants could look closer to home instead with Scotland international and former Ross County ace Ross Stewart now the club’s number one option.
Rangers also want a new goalkeeper with Jack Butland of Crystal Palace one option. A left-back is also high on Van Bronckhorst’s list of priorities. Emmanuel Longelo of West Ham is reportedly a target.
