Agent confirms Premier League interest in reported Spurs target Amadou Diawara

Napoli midfielder Amadou Diawara has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

The agent of Napoli midfielder Amadou Diawara has told Tutto Mercato Web that there are Premier League teams pursuing a deal, amid links to Tottenham Hotspur.

Diawara, 20, started out with San Marino before heading to Bologna in 2015, and his impressive 2015-16 campaign earned him a big move to Napoli just a year after his arrival.

The Guinean midfielder has been touted as one of Europe’s top young midfield players, but he has been a little frustrated with his playing time – or lack thereof – under Maurizio Sarri this season.

Diawara has started just nine games in all competitions this season, and whilst he has made a total of 21 appearances, he isn’t quite receiving the first-team football he is looking for.

With Jorginho, Allan, Marek Hamsik and Piotr Zielinski among the midfielders at Sarri’s disposal, a young player like Diawara may find himself left out on occasion, but that isn’t halting interest in his signature.

An exclusive report from Calcio Napoli 24 last month claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are keen to land Diawara, and were prepared to offer around €38million (£33.5million) to secure his signature.

No January deal materialised, but agent Daniele Piraino, who represents Diawara, has told Tutto Mercato Web that Premier League clubs are in fact interested in his client, but it’s too early to discuss a move given that the summer transfer window is still some months away.

“There are some Premier League clubs interested, but it’s premature to talk about this,” said Piraino.

Napoli are now left in a tough situation. Sarri’s men are top of the Serie A table after just one defeat this season and are looking for a first Scudetto since 1990, meaning major changes are unlikely before the end of the season, leaving Diawara on the sidelines.

Napoli won’t want to lose such a promising young player though, and with Spurs seemingly looking for a successor to Mousa Dembele as a box-to-box midfielder, Diawara could fit the bill, leaving Napoli open to losing the youngster this summer.
