West Ham United made a move to sign Ajax winger Steven Bergwjn during the January transfer window but the door could be open for a summer move.

The pressure is mounting on West Ham United boss David Moyes after a 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

West Ham barely even turned up and completely collapsed after going 1-0 down at the London Stadium.

Fans left in droves even before the half-time whistle and West Ham fans will be left questioning some of the club’s late business in January.

Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma were let go without replacements being sourced in the final third.

Ibrahim Osman was a top target but talks to sign the Nordsjaelland wide man broke down and he will now join Brighton and Hove Albion this summer.

West Ham United missed out on Steven Bergwijn

Another name on West Ham’s list was Steven Bergwijn – but they missed out on him too.

The former Tottenham Hotspur wide man currently serves as Ajax captain but links to West Ham emerged back in November.

HITC Football understands that Bergwijn was offered to West Ham in January and there was some interest from the Hammers.

No deal was done though and Bergwijn’s agent has now offered comments on the situation.

Speaking on ESPN on Sunday, agent Nathan van Kooperen admitted that interest emerged from West Ham and Saudi Arabia in January.

As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Van Kooperen noted that Bergwijn is focused right now but wouldn’t rule out a transfer at the end of the season.

“It’s true about the interest from Saudi and West Ham last window,” said Van Kooperen. “At the moment Stevie is very important for Ajax, he is the captain so nothing to complain. We started a 2 years project with Ajax. What will happen in the summer we will see. He is focused on Ajax and to play the Euros,” he added.

West Ham may well be back in for Bergwijn this summer but the 26-year-old will divide opinion.

Seven goals and four assists in 16 league games is a decent record this term but the Premier League is a major step up from the Eredivisie.

Bergwijn already knows that having joined Tottenham back in 2020, and he didn’t really make a lasting impact at Spurs.

Maybe Bergwijn will fancy another crack at English football but one thing is for sure – West Ham need more attacking signings this summer, whether it’s Bergwijn or other players.
