Rangers already have four first-team centre backs at Steven Gerrard’s disposal, but one more could end up at Ibrox.

The Gers brought in Filip Helander and George Edmundson last summer, replacing Joe Worrall and Gareth McAuley.

With Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic still at Ibrox too, Gerrard has plenty to pick from. However, one more centre back is being linked with a move to Glasgow.

The agent of Metz defender Mamadou Fofana has told The Scottish Sun that Rangers want his client, but face a battle with three Russian clubs.

“Rangers are looking at Mamadou, but they are not alone,” said Traore. “There are clubs in Russia interested, including Krasnodar, Dynamo Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow. We will decide this summer what is the best option for him,” he added.

Fofana, 22, joined Metz from Alanyaspor for just £400,000 in 2018. Now, Metz allegedly see him as a £2.5million player, having impressed in France.

The 6ft 2in defender has been a regular for Metz, and now has 17 caps for Mali too. Rangers have seemingly spotted his progress in France, and now want him at Ibrox.

Yet given the global pandemic, it’s difficult to imagine Rangers splashing £2.5million on another centre back when they already have four.

Unless one of those first-team centre backs is moving on, or unless there are long-term fears about Helander after his broken foot, there are bigger priorities for Gerrard and co.
