The agent of defender Rashid Sumaila has told the Daily Mail that Rangers have approached the player about a summer move to Ibrox.

After losing 5-1 to Celtic last weekend, it’s clear that Rangers need defensive reinforcements this summer, especially with both Clint Hill and Philippe Senderos out of contract at the end of the season.

Manager Pedro Caixinha has previously hinted that he would want to sign players he trusts and has worked with previously, and that appears to be the case with the latest Rangers transfer rumour.

The Daily Mail report that Rangers want to land Ghanaian international Rashid Sumaila, and carry quotes from the player’s agent admitting that the Gers have made an approach.

Sumaila, 24, had spells with Ebusua Dwarfs, Asante Kotko and Mamelodi Sundowns before heading to Kuwait with Qadsia, and he joined Caixinha at Qatari club Al-Gharafa in 2016, penning a loan deal to play under the now-Rangers boss.

The duo appear to have struck up quite the relationship, and Sumaila’s agent Pedro Serpa Pinto has revealed that Rangers have made an approach direct to the player about a free transfer move to Ibrox this summer, with Serpa Pinto expecting talks with Rangers in the near future.

“I can confirm that Rangers have approached the player and informed his club in Kuwait,” said Serpa Pinto. “As you know the player is on loan at Al Gharafa right now. But he likes the coach Pedro Caixinha and he would like to work with him again in Scotland. I think this can happen. But so far nobody from Rangers has been in contact with me directly.”

“Anything is possible in football but it depends on their value of the player. So far nobody from Rangers has contacted my directly and they will have to because I am the official agent of the player. I expect they will contact me soon when we will sit down and have a discussion,” he added.

Sumaila has six caps for Ghana and even went to the 2014 World Cup, but with his contract with Qadsia set to expire, it seems that a move to reunite with his former boss Caixinha at Ibrox is on the cards.

Caixinha won’t have the biggest of budgets to work with this summer, so landing a player he trusts on a free transfer could be a move that appeals to the Gers boss.
