What a first season it was back in the Premier League for Leeds United.
Marcelo Bielsa masterminded a ninth-placed finish for the Whites, who hadn’t played a top-flight game for 16 long and painful years.
A lot of players had a role in Leeds’ success last term.
Patrick Bamford scored 17 goals, Raphinha proved himself a revelation after joining United last summer, and Kalvin Phillips reminded everybody what a huge talent he is after breaking into the England squad.
But Illan Meslier also had a wonderful season.
The French goalkeeper, who joined the Elland Road club for £5 million last summer after impressing on loan, is still only 22 and it’s clear that he has a massive future ahead of him.
This is good and bad for Leeds because when Meslier leaves, it’ll be for big money when you consider the going rate for a young, top-class keeper these days.
The bad news is, they’ll be losing a fantastic player and one who’ll be difficult to replace.
There hasn’t been any speculation about leaving this summer yet but, according to his agent, Paris Saint-Germain are already watching Meslier but want to see how his second year in the Premier League is.
Yvon Pouliquen told Le Telegramme: “PSG are watching, but Illan’s goal is to play, especially at his age. He has just had his first season in the Premier League, he will have to confirm [his level] in the second.”
