Newcastle United are interested in Joe Gomez as Eddie Howe finally looks to sign the Liverpool defender this summer.

Newcastle United keen on Joe Gomez

Agent Haydn Dodge, who fronts the Next Generation Management agency, has told Caught Offside about Newcastle’s interest in Gomez.

Dodge claims that Newcastle have liked Gomez for a while now and seems to be on their wish list for the summer.

“It is quite well known that Newcastle United have long admired defender Joe Gomez as they look to bolster their centre-half options ahead of several players being out of contract this summer,” said Dodge.

Newcastle may well be in the market for another centre back this summer.

Jamaal Lascelles seems primed to leave and adding another right-footed defender to compete with Fabian Schar would be ideal.

Gomez suits that bill perfectly and Newcastle could now launch their move for the Liverpool man this summer.

It seems that Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has been a big fan of Gomez for a while now.

The Daily Mail reported in January 2017 that Howe wanted to take Gomez on loan from Liverpool to Bournemouth.

That deal never materialised but Howe seems to have kept his interest in Gomez.

It may be time for Joe Gomez to leave Liverpool

Gomez was tipped as something of a wonderkid when Liverpool snapped him up from Charlton Athletic in 2015.

Now 25, Gomez has played nearly 200 times for Liverpool but his future feels unclear.

Gomez has started 13 Premier League games this season, meaning he has failed to really nail down a starting spot on a regular basis.

Ibrahim Konate seems to be ahead of Gomez as the partner for Virgil van Dijk – and Liverpool want another defender.

Evan Ndicka and Josko Gvardiol have been linked with Liverpool potentially signing a left-sided defender.

Letting a right-footer go to make way for a left-footer makes sense and Gomez could be the man to go.

Hailed as ‘exceptional’ by Jurgen Klopp last season, Gomez may well need to leave in order to play regularly.

Gomez hasn’t been capped by England since 2020 and really needs to be playing regularly to get back to that level.

Newcastle could offer that opportunity but Liverpool may command a high price given that the Magpies are emerging as a real rival.
