According to Vincenzo Morabito, Liverpool are in talks with Kalidou Koulibaly’s representatives over a potential move to Anfield.
The football agent and market intermediary told Gonfia La Rete: “Koulibaly at Liverpool? Certainly. Liverpool are a real and concrete possibility, they are already talking to the player’s entourage. The club wants to put him alongside Virgil van Dijk. Aurelio De Laurentiis will try to take home €70 million (£59.7 million).”
Now, this is very exciting news for fans of Jürgen Klopp’s side.
Koulibaly is arguably in the top five centre-backs across Europe.
If Klopp is able to pair him with Van Dijk, we struggle to see how any opposition forward will be able to breach the colossal duo.
Interestingly, Morabito claims that Napoli will try to get £59.7 million for Sadio Mané’s Senegal teammate.
That might seem like a lot, but considering what the Italian side rejected from Manchester United in 2018, it could be considered a bargain.
As Goal covered, Napoli President De Laurentiis said he rejected a £95 million bid from the Red Devils.
In that respect, if Liverpool were able to get Koulibaly for around £35 million less than that, it has to be considered good business.
Some of you may not be too familiar with Koulibaly. If that’s the case, Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti once made some useful comparisons.
While at Napoli, the Toffees boss once likened the former KRC Genk man to the likes of Paolo Maldini, Sergio Ramos and Thiago Silva, while also calling him clever.
Calciomercato quote Ancelotti as saying: “Koulibaly belongs in the category of Maldini, Thuram, Thiago Silva, and Sergio Ramos. He’s very clever.”
If Liverpool responded to their centre-back crisis by signing Koulibaly, it would be a massive statement.
