Tottenham Hotspur’s striker target Santiago Gimenez has broken a Feyenoord record as the Premier League-linked centre-forward hits 12 goals in just eight Eredivisie appearances at the start of the new campaign.

The Mexico marksman, after scoring both of Feyenoord’s goals in the 2-0 weekend win over PEC Zwolle, distanced himself from claims suggesting that the all-time Eredivisie record of 43 goals in a single season is under threat.

Matching the legendary Coen Dillen’s tally, Santiago Gimenez tells the Eindhoven Dagblad, is ‘almost impossible’. And he may be right. But the fact that this is even a point worthy of discussion is testament to the remarkable form of a striker who fired Feyenoord to domestic glory in 2023, and feels like to do the same in 2024.

A pair of prolific finishes against PEC Zwolle means Gimenez is the first Feyenoord player ever to reach 12 goals after just eight appearances.

Tottenham Hotspur like Santiago Gimenez

“Santi is one of the top ten (most coveted) players in Europe,” Gimenez’s agent told Media Tempo in August. “So even Tottenham Hotspur (are interested). Many clubs (want him). Milan, Inter, Napoli and Lazio.

“(Atletico Madrid) were very interested.”

Maintain his remarkable run of form the offers will soon come rolling in for Gimenez. Feyenoord coach Arne Slot – himself a target for Tottenham Hotspur not so long ago – is refusing to rule out a potential January departure, with Ayase Ueda already brought in as a potential replacement.

Tottenham, for all their success in the early Ange Postecoglou era, are still potentially a top-class centre-forward short of establishing themselves as genuine Premier League title contenders.

Gimenez breaks Feyenoord record

“Yes, I am in good shape. But I also know that I can still improve a lot as a striker,” Gimenez tells Voetbal Primeur.

A scary thought indeed.

“I go to the training pitch at Feyenoord every day with the hope that I can improve a bit. I work with a great coach, with good people in the rest of the staff. And they help me to get better.”

“It is the first time in my career that I have scored 12 goals in eight games. I can only see that as a reward for all the energy I put in, and everything I experienced here.”
