Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur face a ‘very difficult’ task if they want to lure Joaquin Piquerez away from Palmeiras this summer, the Uruguay international’s representative tells Andre Hernan on YouTube.

Piquerez celebrates his 24th birthday later this month. A multi-million move across the Atlantic would be a fitting gift for a talented young defender with an impressive array of trophies under his belt, alongside a healthy collection of international caps.

Piquerez, a seven-time Uruguay international, was a key part of the Palmeiras team who won the Copa Libertadores last year. And, according to Goal, his performances on the left-hand side of Abel Ferreira’s backline have caught the eye of Tottenham, Marseille and others.

But, with three-and-a-half years remaining on his Palmeiras contract, agreeing a deal for the Montevideo-born dynamo before the summer comes to an end is certainly easier said than done. Especially with the Periquito Verde in hot pursuit of another Brazilian Serie A title.

“Yes, our team is working hard (to take) Piquerez to Europe,” explains Marco Vanzini, one of the defender’s representatives.

“There are two or three clubs in France and two in Germany interested in the player. But it is very difficult for Palmeiras to release Piquerez now.”

Piquerez, who joined the Brazilian giants from Penarol in 2021, will feature for Uruguay at the Qatar World Cup. And his ability to play at left-back or at centre-half would come in handy at a Tottenham side who’s three-man backline relies upon the flexibility and technical craft of the defenders at Antonio Conte’s disposal.

Spurs appear to be well-stocked on the left-hand side for the time being however. Ivan Perisic will compete with Ryan Sessegnon for a wing-back spot next term. Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet, meanwhile, will battle for a place alongside Eric Dier, Cristian Romero or Davinson Sanchez.

“I’m happy for Lenglet,” Conte said after the Barcelona loanee impressed during an adventurous, ball-playing performance in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Jose Mourinho’s Roma.

“He came in with personality. We need a player to play, to play with personality, to have the quality to play football, also to attack. It was positive.”
