Mario Melchiot has suggested that Antonio Conte took the Tottenham Hotspur job to ‘prove’ to Chelsea that he is ‘better than them’, but now it’s not working out.
The former Chelsea defender added that he would be ‘worried’ if he was inside the Spurs dressing room and Conte acted in the way that he did over the weekend.
Following Tottenham’s 3-3 draw at Southampton, where they let a 3-1 lead slip to a team at the bottom of the Premier League table, Conte proceeded to verbally let rip at near-on everyone at the club.
The Italian is known to be outspoken, but this was Premier League Hall of Fame stuff from the former Chelsea manager, who won the Premier League title at Stamford Bridge.
Either way, it has put him in a bit of a mess and now he could be facing the sack by Daniel Levy.
Some were left surprised when Conte first took the Spurs job, but Melchiot thinks he did to have ‘something against Chelsea’, but it’s now going horribly wrong, as he told Premier League Productions (20/03/23 at 2:10 pm).
“He (Conte) took that job thinking ‘okay, I was at Chelsea’,” said Melchiot. “It didn’t go the way he wanted it to be.
“So, I am going to take that job (Tottenham) now and I am going to have something against them. I am going to show you that I am going to build a team that’s better than them.
“Okay, it didn’t work out. There is so much emotion, so much more impact than just only the game. There is history and there are things that happened in that team.
“I know in that dressing room, things must have happened, and he took the emotion from the dressing room to TV. And that is the surprise no-one expected – I don’t want to be part of a team that has a manager like that because I am worried.”
IT’S ALL GOING WRONG AT TOTTENHAM
If Chelsea, who are sitting tenth in the Premier League table under Graham Potter after heavy, heavy spending, think they have got it bad, then they are probably wrong.
Yes, the short-term reads that Spurs are fourth and Chelsea will and should miss out on a top-four finish for next season.
But all of this isn’t good for the long-term for those at Hotspur Way, especially if they lose star man Harry Kane in the summer.
