Former Tottenham loanee Pau Lopez had a tough evening back in action for Espanyol.

Pau Lopez is back in the spotlight in Spain after a wasted year of his career at Tottenham Hotspur.

Lopez spent the 2016/17 season playing for Tottenham’s under-23 team and after signing on loan at Espanyol.

He has since re-assumed his position as Espanyol’s first choice goalkeeper, but was on the wrong end of a mauling at the weekend.

Lopez lined up against Barcelona and conceded five goals as Lionel Messi turned on the style.

The goalkeeper actually came out of the game with credit, preventing Barcelona from embarrassing Espanyol even more than the final 5-0 scoreline.

The Evening Standard reported Spurs had a chance to sign him for £6.2 million in the summer but chose not to.

Lopez could do little to prevent Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick at the weekend while Gerard Pique and Luis Suarez added further goals.

SkySports reported late in the transfer window that Lopez turned down the chance to sign for Brighton.

Playing at the Nou Camp will certainly beat playing for Tottenham’s under-23 side, but as Lopez picked the ball out of his own net for the fifth time at the weekend, you could not blame the Spaniard for wishing he was spending his weekend sitting in the stands in North London.
