Tottenham-mad pundit Darren Ambrose says Antonio Conte will sign a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur during the January transfer window, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Newcastle midfielder added that, after Daniel Levy provides the highly-demanding Italian with his first signing of 2023, he then thinks Conte will extend his stay at Spurs.

Fans are waiting for their trophy-laden coach, who joined last November after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo, to commit his future for the long-term.

The hope is that if Conte puts ink to paper, then Harry Kane, who has less than 18 months left on his own deal, would then follow suit.

Either way, a few interesting months await those in north London, as boyhood Tottenham fan, Darren Ambrose, stated that he doesn’t want Mauricio Pochettino back.

“If Antonio Conte is going to walk away, who knows, I hope he doesn’t and probably the majority of Spurs fans hope he doesn’t,” said Ambrose.

“If he does walk away, then you need a squad that is going to attract a top-class manager. Not one that is going to say ‘right, let’s come in I need to rebuild once again’. You need a squad to attract a top-class manager, so back him right now. By backing him right now, he will also turn his head and say ‘right, I am going to sign the contract’. Stop playing cat and mouse with a top-class manager.

“You don’t replace Antonio Conte with Mauricio Pochettino, right now, you don’t. You give Conte the opportunity to try and win Spurs a trophy. I think if you back him in this transfer window, he will sign a new contract. Back him in the summer, and then next season, you are looking at challenging for a lot of trophies

“I do think he will stay. I think after the first signing (the contract will get done). I think Daniel Levy has to show a bit of ambition, then first signing he will go ‘right, I am ready’ and will sign. Yeah, I think so (this January).”

CONTE’S CONTRACT

A late Christmas present might yet arrive for the Tottenham faithful, and if it does, then it will come in the form of Conte signing a new deal.

Whilst he has every right to argue and demand more ambition from the top, he has been backed during his two transfer windows so far.

From the captures of Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur last January to the club-record transfer of Richarlison, those in the Hotspur Way boardroom have listened.

Yes, you’re not going to sign every player on your list and some may fall off, but Conte is being backed, so perhaps it’s now time he repays that faith and signs a new contract?
